Two days after Mammootty finished shooting for Kaathal, Jyotika also wrapped up her portions. Directed by Jeo Baby, the film marks Jyotika's comeback to Malayalam after over a decade. Her last Malayalam release was the TK Rajeev Kumar directorial Seetha Kalyanam (2009).

Kaathal is scripted by newcomers Adarsh Sukumaran and Paulson Skaria. Apart from a leaked location still hinting that Mammootty plays a politician's role, the makers are yet to reveal any other details about the film's plot or genre.

Lalu Alex, Muthumani, Chinnu Chandni, Sudhi Kozhikode, Anagha Akku, Josi Sijo and Adarsh Sukumaran also star in the film. Cinematography is handled by Salu K Thomas, and edits are taken care of by Francies Louis. Mathews Pulickal is the music director. All three of them were also part of Jeo Baby's widely acclaimed fim The Great Indian Kitchen. 

Kaathal is produced by Mammootty Kampany and will be distributed by Dulquer Salmaan's Wayfarer Films.
