Mani Ratnam's period epic Ponniyin Selvan - 1 is gearing up to hit screens on September 30. The film is set to be released in Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada. In Kerala, the film will be distributed by Gokulam Gopalan's Sree Gokulam Movies. Actor-filmmaker Shanker Ramakrishnan has written the film's Malayalam dialogues. He had recently penned the dialogues for the Malayalam version of KGF: Chapter 2 as well.

The film, based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1995 novel, is adapted by Mani Ratnam, along with Elango Kumaravel and B Jeyamohan. It stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman, Riyaz Khan, Babu Antony, and R Parthiban.

With music by AR Rahman, the film is shot by Ravi Varman and edited by A Sreekar Prasad. Recently, the makers announced that Ponniyin Selvan will be released in IMAX format, marking the first Tamil film to release in the format.
