Jayasurya's 100th film, Sunny, will be having a direct digital release on Amazon Prime Video on September 23. The streaming service has released a new teaser that gives a better picture of the film.
Director Ranjith Sankar, who helmed the film and co-produced it with Jayasurya under the banner of Dreams N Beyond, had written and shot it towards the end of last year when lockdown restrictions were relaxed. It marks the duo’s eighth collaboration.
Sunny is said to have elements of drama and suspense. It is a single-character drama where Jayasurya plays an emotionally damaged man who lost everything that he earned in his life -- his love, his money and his best friend. Shattered and hopeless, he smuggles himself back from Dubai to Kerala during a global pandemic and shuts himself from society. Sunny befriends a couple of curious strangers over the course of seven days, who change his perspective.
“Sunny is a riveting story of a musician who finds himself in an emotional crisis, and how a sudden turn of events and interactions with complete strangers help him rekindle hope and joy,” said Jayasurya, who has enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with Ranjith so far.
Jayasurya, who is completing 20 years in cinema this year, shared that when he began his journey as an actor, he never imagined that he would be announcing his 100th film. "Sunny, like every other character of mine, is special, but I can confidently say that it has a slightly more special place in my heart because of how unique the concept is," he added.
Ranjith Sankar calls Sunny a work "extremely close" to his heart. "The unique narrative focuses on one single character, and I couldn't be happier to have an actor like Jayasurya bring out this character exceptionally well,” he said. “The film is replete with human emotions that we have carefully woven into the script, which the audiences will relate to.”
Sunny is Jayasurya's follow-up to Sufiyum Sujathayum, also released on Prime last year. It was also the first mainstream Malayalam film to premiere directly on a digital platform.
