Team Puppy reunites for North Karnataka family entertainer Naavu Tumba Olleyavaru

Ayush Malli's comedy-drama explores everyday life in a chawl alongside the folklore of the Helava community

A Sharadhaa

Following the success of last year’s sleeper hit Puppy, director Ayush Malli and his core team are back with their sophomore venture, titled Naavu Tumba Olleyavaru. While retaining the rustic North Karnataka backdrop of their previous outing, the makers have shifted gears towards an out-and-out family entertainer.

True to its tongue-in-cheek title, which translates to "We Are Very Good People," the film is designed as a laugh riot centred on the daily bustle of a vathara (chawl). Beyond the situational comedy of working-class neighbours, Ayush Malli weaves in a narrative track highlighting the unique genealogies and living traditions of the nomadic Helava community.

The team wrapped production after a 52-day shooting schedule held entirely on live locations across Vijayapura, Gadag, aamong few other places to capture the authentic dialect and lifestyle of the region.

Ayush wears multiple hats for the project, taking on writing, direction, and a lead role. The ensemble brings back Puppy cast members Jagadeesh Koppal, Aadi, Durugappa, and Renuka, alongside theatre actors Sahana Prakash, Sanjana Moole, Sahithi, Andappa Sankanur, Kumar, and Nethra Aralahalli.

With the trailer recently out on digital platforms, Naavu Tumba Olleyavaru is in the final stages of post-production. The makers are expected to lock in the theatrical release date soon.
