There are actors who disappear into characters, and then there is Rangayana Raghu, who has built an entire career out of making audiences forget they are watching a performance. Whether it is comedy, drama, sentiment or menace, the actor has repeatedly shown an uncanny ability to inhabit worlds that feel lived in. Going by the newly released teaser of Devi Mahatme, he seems poised to do that once again.

Directed by Maryade Prashne filmmaker Nagraj Somayaji, Devi Mahatme unveiled its first glimpse this week, and it wastes little time in establishing its mood. Running just over a minute, the teaser offers fragments rather than answers, choosing intrigue over exposition. It is a strategy that works.

Set against a coastal backdrop, the visuals are steeped in the culture and textures of Karnataka’s shoreline. There are fleeting glimpses of Huli Vesha, the region’s vibrant tiger dance tradition, woven into a narrative that appears to draw equally from folklore, mystery and suspense. Rather than revealing the plot, the teaser focuses on atmosphere, inviting viewers into a world where something unsettling lurks beneath the surface.

At the centre of it all is Rangayana Raghu. The actor’s intense screen presence gives the teaser much of its weight. With very little dialogue and a series of striking expressions, he manages to create curiosity around both the character and the story. It is the kind of performance tease that leaves audiences wanting more.
