Bengaluru claims the first whistle for Vijay's Jana Nayagan

Karnataka gets a head start on advance bookings for Vijay's final film, with early morning shows fuelling a rush from fans across the state border with early morning shows at single screens are being sold in the ₹800 to ₹1,000 range

The first battle for Jana Nayagan isn't at the box office. It's at the booking window.

While Tamil Nadu is still counting down to the start of ticket sales, a handful of single-screen theatres in Bengaluru have already gone live, triggering an immediate rush among fans eager to be part of the first day, first show.

What makes the response even more significant is that this is only the first phase of bookings. So far, only a few single-screen theatres have opened their ticket inventory, while major multiplex chains are yet to begin sales. Even with such limited availability, the demand has been strong, suggesting the frenzy could intensify once multiplex bookings go live.

The biggest attraction is the 6 am First Day First Show. For many fans, the timing itself is part of the experience, with moviegoers from districts along the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border expected to travel to Bengaluru to catch the earliest screening before the film opens in full swing elsewhere.

The booking rush has also pushed ticket prices into premium territory. Entry-level tickets are currently priced at around ₹500, while the most sought-after seats for the early morning shows are being sold in the ₹800 to ₹1,000 range. Despite the higher prices, fans have shown little hesitation in securing their seats.

The enthusiasm is particularly striking considering the film's turbulent journey. In April, Jana Nayagan suffered a setback when footage from the film leaked online, raising questions about its theatrical prospects. Those concerns now appear to have faded. If the early response in Bengaluru is any indication, audience excitement has only gathered momentum.

Once bookings open in Tamil Nadu, Jana Nayagan is expected to dominate cinema screens across the state. The anticipation surrounding what is widely expected to be Vijay's final film before entering politics full-time has already reshaped release calendars, with several Tamil films moving to August and September to avoid a direct clash.

Exhibitors believe the film deserves a wide release. After a seven-month delay, rising interest costs and the scale of the production, many theatre owners feel Jana Nayagan needs a massive theatrical rollout to maximise its box-office potential. Trade watchers, too, believe the film could provide a much-needed boost to theatrical business in the second half of 2026.

Directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan stars Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Priyamani, Prakash Raj and Gautham Vasudev Menon, with music by Anirudh Ravichander. The film is set for a worldwide release on July 23.

For now, though, the spotlight belongs to Bengaluru. Before Tamil Nadu opens its booking counters, Karnataka's capital has already become the first city to sound the whistle on what is shaping up to be one of the year's biggest theatrical events.
