What happens when a sleepy coastal village is visited by something—or someone—that no one is prepared for? The trailer of Su From So, directed by JP Thuminad and backed by Raj B Shetty’s Lighter Buddha Films, gives us a playful yet eerie peek into the chaos that follows such a situation. Set in the lush and picturesque Someshwar region near Mangaluru, the film offers a fresh take on horror-comedy, where fear and laughter walk hand in hand.
Su From So marks the Kannada directorial debut of JP Thuminad, a well-known name in Tulu cinema, who has also acted in films like Sapta Sagaradaache Ello – Side B and Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye. With Raj B Shetty producing the film and serving as a lyricist, the project reflects the same spirit that made Ondu Motteya Kathe such a memorable film: small-town stories told with honesty, humour, and heart.
The story follows Ravi Anna (Shaneel Gautham), a respected figure in the village whose world is upended when mysterious knocks begin echoing through his home. Soon, the entire village is caught in a whirlwind of paranoia and superstition, with the name Sulochana from Someshwar sending shivers and sniggers in equal measure. From chaotic rituals to comic mishaps, the trailer teases a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously, even as it builds a sense of eerie suspense.
Raj B Shetty, at the sidelines of the trailer launch, said, “This film is special because it brings a completely new team to the forefront. JP, a friend from theatre, had this story ready six years ago. Now it has come alive. I’ve always loved the comedy genre, and Su From So is a perfect blend of the absurd and the authentic.”
Director JP Thuminad shared, “I came into cinema with the dream of directing. After years of acting, this is finally my first directorial. It’s a fictional tale, but it’s designed to float the viewer on a sea of laughter.”
The film also stars Prakash Thuminad, Sandhya Arekere, Deepak Rai Panaje, and Ramdas. The music, composed by 19-year-old Sumedh K, and the cinematography by S Chandrashekaran and Praveen Shriyan, elevate the film’s mood, while the already popular track Danks Anthem has set the tone.
With six songs, a grounded ensemble cast, and a youthful crew, Su From So is set to offer a quirky, spirited escape at the cinemas on July 25. As Raj adds, “We hope it entertains you as much as it entertained us making it.”
