Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee dies after drowning during film shoot

The tragic incident occured when the 43-year-old fell off a boat in the sea while shooting for a serial Bhole Baba Par Karega

The Bengali film industry has been in a state of shock ever since popular actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee died on Sunday after drowning in the sea at Talsari beach in Digha, near the Odisha-West Bengal border.

The tragic incident occured when the 43-year-old fell off a boat in the sea while shooting for a serial Bhole Baba Par Karega. As he went missing, rescue teams entered the area and pulled him out of the deep waters. Rahul was immediately rushed to the Digha Sub‑divisional hospital, but was declared dead upon arrival. Initial investigation revealed his cause of death as accidental drowning.

The West Bengal police is currently probing details behind the cause of the mishap. Further investigations are underway.

Rahul Arunoday Banerjee is survived by his wife and actor Priyanka Sarkar. Sharing her grief and requesting the family's need for privacy, she wrote, "This is a time of immense grief and deep despair for us. In this difficult moment, we sincerely request space and privacy. There is a child, a mother, a family, and loved ones trying to navigate this loss together. We kindly urge our friends and colleagues in the media to respect our boundaries, refrain from intrusion, and allow us the dignity to grieve in peace. Your understanding and support mean more than ever at this time."

The state's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her shock and sadness over the actor's untimely demise. ""I am shocked, deeply saddened to hear the news that the distinguished, young, and popular actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee is suddenly no longer among us. I am unable to comprehend what exactly happened. He was one of my favourite actors and a person I truly admired. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family, loved ones, and countless admirers," she said, noting that his passing is an "irreparable loss" to the Bengali film industry.

Born on October 16, 1983, in Kolkata, Rahul gained recognition with the 2008 film Chirodini Tumi Je Amar and later appeared in notable projects like Tumi Asbe Bole (2014), Zulfiqar (2016), Byomkesh Gotro (2018), Biday Byomkesh (2018), and The Academy of Fine Arts (2025). On the small screen, he was also part of well-known serials such as Hargouri Pice Hotel and Mohonna.
