Actor Phalguni Khanna, known for starring in the Sonakshi Sinha starrer Akira (2016), recently made her Sri Lankan film debut with the Sinhala-language film Gautama Buddha Matha. The film, directed by Sunil Laria Ratna, is an evocative portrayal of Maha Prajapati Gautamy, one of the Buddha's earliest and most revered followers.

Reflecting on her role in the film, Phalguni shared in a press release, “It is a great honour to bring to life such an iconic character. Maha Prajapati Gautamy was one of the first to embrace the Buddha’s teachings, and her contributions are immeasurable. She is a revered figure, especially in Sri Lanka, and the warmth and respect I’ve received from audiences have been truly overwhelming.”

She spoke about the challenges in learning the Sinhala language for the film. “Mastering the Sinhala language was certainly a challenge. However, I felt an almost divine guidance throughout the process, as though the role was meant for me. Language is never a barrier in cinema—art itself speaks universally. Through film, we can convey so much—every sequence, every gesture tells a story,” added the actor.

Phalguni also spoke about the kind of roles she wants to do moving on. “I always look forward to roles that not only challenge me as an artist but also hold meaning and respect. Cinema is a powerful medium, and I want my work to reflect values that inspire people,” she said.

Gautama Buddha Matha was released in Sri Lanka on December 10.
