The Spanish-language adaptation of the dark fairy tale novel, Bad Girls by Camila Sosa Villada, is all set to be headlined by Karla Sofía Gascón. The film, titled Las Malas, marks Gascón's first breakout role after her Cannes-winning performance in Emilia Pérez.
The film is set to be helmed by Armando Bó, who has also written the script along with Josefina Licitra. He has previously won an Academy Award for co-writing Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2014 drama Birdman.
Las Malas is backed by About Entertainment, Infinity Hill, and Suma Content. Gascón will be seen as Aunt Encarna, the leader of a trans sex workers group, who is tough but also motherly. The group's routine is disturbed when she decides to adopt an abandoned baby without thinking about its consequences.
First published in 2019, Bad Girls marked the debut novel of Villada, an Argentinian actor who is also trans. The novel, which is a mix of magical and gritty everyday street life, went on to win several awards.
Bó, Natacha Cervi, Mercedes Reincke, Ezequiel Olemberg, Axel Kuschevatzky, Cindy Teperman, Javier Ambrossi, and Javier Calvo are producing the project. Villada, Phin Glynn, and Delfina Montecchia serve as executive producers.
Gascón bagged the Cannes' Best Actress award for her performance in Emilia Pérez, the bold crime musical directed by Jacques Audiard. She became the first trans woman to bag the award.
