The trailer of Anurag Kashyap's Dobaaraa is out. The film stars Taapsee Pannu with Rahul Bhatt, Pavail Gulati and Nassar.

A remake of the Spanish-language Mirage (2018), Dobaaraa combines thriller and sci-fi elements. On a stormy night, Taapsee's character is visited by a young boy on a television screen. The characters, we realise, have been mysteriously connected across decades, leading back to a grisly murder in 1996. Taapsee has the opportunity to save the boy's life even as events in the present timeline come to mirror those in the past.

Speaking at the trailer launch in Mumbai, Anurag explained why he had shied away from science fiction all these years.

"I used to be scared of science fiction," Anurag said. "Today the world is one place. On OTT audiences are watching everything. If you can't be (Christopher) Nolan, you shouldn't even try."

Dobaaraa is co-produced by Cult Movies, a new wing under Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms.

Ekta spoke about bringing Dobaaraa as well as Dibakar Banerjee's LSD 2 to theatres. Mid-budget, director-driven films have been taking the OTT route of late, especially in the post-pandemic age.

"I definitely want to release Dobaaraa and LSD 2 as (our) beginning films. Eventually, it will be the response that will decide because we cannot take too much of a risk. We've taken a calculated risk here."
