Nitesh Tiwari’s much-anticipated Ramayana is expanding its theatrical footprint beyond India, with Sony Pictures Entertainment set to take the mythological epic to audiences across international markets. The film, mounted as a two-part cinematic spectacle, features Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana.
The first instalment traces Rama and Sita’s life during their exile and the events that follow Sita’s abduction by Ravana. The story eventually sets the stage for the confrontation between Rama and the Lankan king, with the makers mounting the familiar epic on a scale aimed at both Indian and international audiences. The film will be available in multiple languages, including English.
The project has been positioned as a global Indian production, with several international technicians joining the team. Ramayana is being filmed for IMAX, while DNEG is overseeing its visual effects. The Oscar-winning VFX company, known for films such as Dune, Interstellar and Inception, is also associated with the project through producer Namit Malhotra.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has now announced that Ramayana: Part One will release worldwide on November 6, 2026, scheduled around the Diwali festivities. The second instalment is expected to follow during Diwali 2027.
The film’s international ambitions extend to its music as well, with Hans Zimmer and AR Rahman collaborating on the project. Action choreography comes from Terry Notary and Guy Norris, while Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal are credited with production design. The screenplay has been written by Shridhar Raghavan.
Produced by Prime Focus Studios and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, Ramayana has also attracted a major Indian distribution partner in Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The company has acquired the film’s theatrical distribution rights across India in a reported Rs 250-crore deal.
The film’s first trailer, released in July, offered a look at its elaborate recreation of the epic world, including large-scale battles, mythological weapons and the conflict between Rama and Ravana. The trailer was released across five Indian languages, with an English version subsequently unveiled for international audiences.
Nitish, whose credits include Dangal, directs the two-part adaptation, with Malhotra producing. The cast also includes Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravi Dubey as Lakshmana. The film is being presented as a large-scale cinematic interpretation of the ancient epic, with both instalments being developed as one overarching story.
