Ramayana’s IMAX demand puts Godzilla Minus Zero’s India release in doubt

Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana: Part 1, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama and Yash as Ravana, is gearing up for a November release, with the makers planning a large-scale theatrical rollout. Meanwhile, Godzilla Minus Zero, the sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, is also built around a premium theatrical experience. Both films are expected to draw audiences seeking spectacle on the big screen.

According to reports, Godzilla Minus Zero’s planned November 6 release in India could be postponed because of the limited availability of IMAX screens during Ramayana’s opening window. The possible shift is attributed to the anticipated demand for the Indian epic, which could leave the Japanese film with restricted access to the premium format. However, neither the postponement nor a revised Indian release date has been officially announced.

The possibility of a delay follows an earlier report, which said Godzilla Minus Zero was expected to release in India on November 6, a day after Ramayana: Part 1’s reported November 5 release. As a local production expected to draw greater demand, Ramayana was likely to receive most of the available IMAX screenings. The reports suggested that Godzilla Minus Zero could get just one show at some IMAX cinemas, with the remaining slots allotted to the Indian film.

For Godzilla Minus Zero, such an arrangement could pose a distribution challenge. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film is the follow-up to Godzilla Minus One, which won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The new instalment is also the first Japanese production to be filmed for IMAX, making access to the format particularly relevant to its theatrical presentation.

A postponement in India would not, however, mean that the film’s international release is changing. The official Godzilla website has announced a North American theatrical release beginning November 6, alongside special IMAX early-access screenings on November 3. The uncertainty concerns the Indian release schedule, where the reported screen crunch could influence the distributor’s plans.

For Ramayana, meanwhile, a potential withdrawal of its IMAX competition could offer exhibitors greater flexibility in allocating premium-format shows during its opening days. Whether that translates into a significant box-office advantage will depend on the final screen allocation, audience demand and the eventual release date of Godzilla Minus Zero in India. Until the distributor confirms its plans, the much-discussed clash remains unresolved.
