Recently, we had reported about Imran Khan being detained at one of the anti-CEC protests in Mumbai, which were being held to demand the resignation of Election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Now, reports are coming in that Mumbai Police has asked the actor to leave India by October 28.
According to some reports, Mumbai Police gave a written notice to Imran Khan, giving him a deadline of two weeks to leave the country. "Action has been taken against Imran Khan under the relevant provision of the Immigration Act over his participation in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen," the police said.
Reportedly, the reasons cited for this notice is that Imran is believed to hold US citizenship and only an Overseas Citizen of Indi (OCI) card rather than full Indian citizenship. Previously, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya had publicly criticised the actor, alleging him of participating in ‘illegal political agitation’ and ‘violating OCI provisions and visa conditions,’ and had approached Mumbai police with the said charges.
On Saturday, Imran Khan was one among the 400-odd people to be detained during the CJP protests being held at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai. He was joined by his partner, actor Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayne Marie Khan. Shortly before being detained, Imran had said to media, “As a person who lives in this city, I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted, why are people's voices being suppressed. I am not in a position to make demands of anyone. Nor am I part of any organization. I am just here as a representative."
In another clip that surfaced later on, Imran could be seen saying about his detention, “I honestly don't know why I have been brought here. They picked all of us from the streets and asked us to sit in the vans.”
