Riteish Vilasrao Deshmukh, who is currently basking in the box office success of his historical drama Raja Shivaji, was recently honoured with the Maharashtra Gaurav award for his contribution to Hindi and Marathi cinema. Among many prominent ministers and commissioners, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis was present at the event to confer the honours upon Riteish.
Besides his contribution to Indian cinema, the award also acknowledges Riteish’s efforts to bring recognition to Maharashtrian culture, roots and rich history through his on-screen work. Riteish said at the ceremony, "when I started this journey in 2003, I thought that my first film would be my last. But you people gave me so much love, and accepted me. I thank you all for that."
Incidentally, Riteish received the award on the occasion of birth anniversary of his late father Vilasrao Deshmukh, making the accomplishment all the more special and meaningful.
Raja Shivaji was Riteish’s third directorial after Ved (2022) and Lai Bhaari (2014). With its impactful portrayal of one of India’s most revered warrior kings, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Raja Shivaji strongly resonated with the Marathi audience, becoming the first Marathi film to hit the 100 crore landmark at domestic box office. While Riteish played the titular role, the ensemble cast includes prominent stars like Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, and Sanjay Dutt in key roles.
Meanwhile, Riteish is yet to make any official announcements about his upcoming directorial projects. As an actor, he will next be seen in Shah Rukh Khan-starrer King and Dhamaal 4.
