Remember when Indian cricket player Virat Kohli revealed his favourite song, it made the headlines? For the uninitiated, Virat mentioned the song 'Nee Singam Dhan,' from Silambarasan TR's film Pathu Thala as the track that he was listening to on loop at one point. Recently, filmmaker Priyadarshan made a similar revelation, this time about Virat Kohli's taste in cinema.
Speaking recently to Pinkvilla, the filmmaker said that the former Indian cricket team captain watches his 2007 film Dhol and talks about it to his teammates before their matches to reduce stress. In a candid admission, he revealed that the film failed at the box office in 2007, although it became more popular over the years thanks to the proliferation of streaming platforms.
Despite the film's box office failure, against his expectations, the filmmaker said that he is delighted about the likes of Virat Kohli watching the film for stress relief. "They tell the dialogues of Dhol to each other," he said, referring to the cricket players. According to Priyadarshan, this is an indication of comedy having "a longer shelf life" as compared to the other genres in cinema. "Humour always survives. It will stay there forever," he said.
Dhol stars Tusshar Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Khemu, and Rajpal Yadav as four friends trying to impress their neighbour (Tanushree Dutta). However, in the process of doing so, the quartet makes a lie about their neighbour that gets them into a situation which puts their lives in danger. Dhol is a remake of director duo Siddique-Lal's 1990 movie In Harihar Nagar, starring Mukesh, Siddique, Jagadish, and Ashokan, among others.
While the film is quite popular in the Hindi belt, it did not garner the same appreciation from the Malayali audience for how closely it followed the plot of the 1990 original.
