Notable theatre and film actor Vijay Crishna passed away on Tuesday evening. The actor was 81 years old at the time of his demise.
While Vijay did not act in too many movies, his performances in Devdas continues to be remembered by film-goers. In the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, Vijay played the role of Devdas' (Shah Rukh Khan) father Narayandas Mukherjee, a stern disciplinarian whose emotional rigidity plays a major role in Devdas’ moral decay.
His other film appearances include Guzaarish (2010), PK (2014), Chain Kulli Ki Main Kulli (2007), and the iconic Richard Attenborough film Gandhi (1982) which also marked his film debut.
Vijay’s most notable act was in the popular Mahesh Dattani play Dance like a Man, for which he performed for over 25 years. Lillette Dubey who worked with Vijay in the play, posted a poignant note on her Instagram page about the late actor, penning, “Heartbroken.. our dearest Vijay Crishna has passed away. A man of many parts… a brilliant actor, handsome, charming, bright with his dry tongue in cheek trademark humour, he was much loved & cherished by us all .. so many memories flood the heart & mind & overwhelm me. RIP my Jairaj... you will never be forgotten. May you entertain the angels as you did us all here.”
The late actor is survived by his wife, Smita Crishna, and their daughters, Nyrika Holkar and Freyan Crishna.
