Awarapan 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2007 film starring Emraan Hashmi, is all set for theatrical release on August 14. Meanwhile, ahead of the film’s release, the makers of Awarapan are reportedly planning a theatrical re-release for their film two weeks prior, on July 31.
Directed by Mohit Suri, 2007’s Awarapan centred around Shivam, a gangster battling the grief of losing his lover Aaliyah (Shriya Saran). He goes against his employer (played by Ashutosh Rana) after the latter asks him to kill his mistress, who reminds Shivam of Aaliyah. While the film didn’t perform well at the box office, it went on to gradually acquire a cult status, especially among Emraan Hashmi fans. The film’s music too continues to be extremely popular. Mohit and Emraan later went on to collaborate on Raaz (2009), Crook (2010), and Murder 2 (2011.)
Meanwhile, Awarapan 2 is being directed by Nitin Kakkar, who is known for films like Filmistaan (2014) and Jawaani Jaaneman (2020). Produced by Vishesh Bhatt under Vishesh Films, the sequel also stars Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi, with the latter playing the main antagonist. The ensemble cast includes Suvinder Vicky, Vijayant Kohli, Aniruddh Rawal, and Atul Kumar. In the technical team, the film has cinematographer Vishnu Rao, editor Devendra Murdeshwar and production designer Teena Paradkar.
The film’s first teaser was released two weeks ago, followed by the release of the first single, ‘Ve Junoon.’ Mithoon is the music composer, while lyrics are by Sayeed Quadri.
At the box office, Awarapan 2 will clash against another star-studded vehicle, Batwara 1947 directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan. The partition drama features Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, and Abhimanyu Singh.
