Diljit Dosanjh film Satluj taken out from ZEE5's overseas slate

Here are the latest developments about the contentious ban on the film Satluj

Cinema Express Desk

Recently, we reported about director Honey Trehan's film Satluj becoming unavailable to the Indian audience following a central government ban only two days after its release on ZEE5. Earlier this Saturday, TNIE reported that a committee formed by the government to look into the film's content has recommended the continuation of the ban on it, claiming that it goes against the country's integrity and sovereignty.

Meanwhile, there has been another interesting development about the film. According to Honey Trehan's latest confirmation to The Indian Express, the film is no longer available on streamer ZEE5's overseas markets either.

Recently, ZEE5 announced the removal of the film from its India market with a rather ambiguous message, which said that, "in light of the current developments," the film would not be available "until further notice" in India.

The removal of the film, formerly known as Punjab '95, has sparked widespread outrage on social media. Multiple film critics and journalists issued a statement that condemned the government move, describing it as an act of "executive overreach".

According to a section of the viewers, it does not sit well with them that a film that they deem to be talking about the realities of Punjab has been banned, even as films that have faced propaganda allegations, such as The Kashmir Files, Dhurandhar, and The Kerala Story, remain accessible to audiences in the country.

Amidst the ban, ZEE5 expressed its continued support for the film alongside its intention to explore all legal avenues to bring it back to viewers in India. Meanwhile, the film has been viewed through pirated sources, forcing the streamer to put out a statement where it asked the audience not to rely on these sources. "We are hopeful and doing everything we can. Please do not support piracy. We remain committed to exploring every possible avenue to bring Satluj back to you," ZEE5 revealed in a recent statement.
