Imran Khan, who was recently seen in a brief cameo in Vir Das directorial Happy Patel: Khatarnaak Jasoos, is reportedly planning a major comeback to acting with a film that also stars Bhumi Pednekar. While the Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na actor had worked with some major filmmakers in his first innings, the actor had also lost out on some big projects. During a recent interview, the actor spoke about some of the missed opportunities, including films like Chennai Express, Delhi 6, and Bhavesh Joshi.
Speaking to PTI, Imran recalled that he was offered by Rohit Shetty the lead role in Chennai Express, which he turned down and was eventually done by Shah Rukh Khan. “Rohit and I had a couple of conversations about it. I saw what he was going for, I thought it was funny But between us, we figured that we were not in sync creatively.” Imran also said that he wouldn’t have been correct for the part, adding, “That’s the conversation we had, and I said, ‘Listen, I don't see us syncing’. Shah Rukh Khan was a better choice, I don't think I could top Shah Rukh.”
Imran also recalled auditioning for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi 6, and being ‘devastated’ at not being chosen for the part, adding, “Looking at the scale of the film and the budget, I guess they didn't want to put the money on a new person, on an untested, unproven person.”
While Imran scored a few hits early on, failure of some of his films eventually led to other missed opportunities like Bhavesh Joshi Superhero. Imran noted, “I got dropped from the film in the aftermath of Gori Tere Pyaar Mein." Like Delhi 6, however, Imran expressed appreciation for Bhavesh Joshi too, adding, "The film turned out well. It's one of those films that is unique and original, somebody has tried to push the boundaries of what we normally get to do.”
Katti Batti (2015), the romantic drama where he co-starred with Kanganaa Ranaut, remains Imran’s last film as a male lead.
