The official trailer of the much-anticipated film Mayasabha: The Hall of Illusions was unveiled on Wednesday evening. Mayasabha is written and directed bt Rahi Anil Barve, the director of 2018 film Tumbbad that’s acquired a cult status in past few years.

The teaser begins with a philosophical line about how the seekers are the last to identify what they were looking for. In Mayasabha, Jaaved Jaaferi promisingly plays an enigmatic figure, part supervillain, part clown — a megalomaniac who hasn’t left a dilapidated movie theatre for decades, trying to recollect where he hid his treasure. The entire narrative revolves around merely four characters who are stuck inside the movie theatre, probably by choice and in hunt of something they are unlikely to ever find.

The teaser leaves more questions open-ended than it answers them. There is plenty of mystique and intrigue in the trailer, with the makers often choosing silence over exposition-heavy dialogues to convey the mood of the narrative, aided by the immersive production values.

Besides Jaaved, Mohd Samad, Deepak Damle and Veena Jamkar play the other three principal characters. Notably, Samad also played an integral role in TumbbadMayasabha is produced by Girish Patel and Ankoor J Singh. In the technical team, Kuldeep Mamania is the cinematographer and Preetam Rai is the production designer. Aasif Pathan is the editor, and background score by Sagar Desai.

Mayasabha will arrive in theatres on January 30, clashing against Rani Mukerji starrer Mardaani 3
