Batwara 1947, the latest Sunny Deol starrer partition drama that released on the eve of Independence Day, continues to struggle at the box office.

After a slight improvement in its Tuesday collections, the film again witnessed major drop on Wednesday, garnering a meagre Rs 1.40 crore nett, showing a 38 percent drop compared to Tuesday. As of on Wednesday, the film’s domestic collections stand at Rs 32.15 crore nett. As far the worldwide collections are concerned, the film is yet to touch the Rs 50 crore mark.

Besides Delhi-NCR, the film registered relatively higher occupancies in centres like Lucknow and Jaipur. Reportedly made on a budget of Rs 140 crore, Batwara 1947 will struggle to touch even half of that figure. However, the film could benefit to some extent from the absence of any major releases this coming week, that is until Toxic arrives in theatres on August 26.

This failure comes as a major setback for Sunny Deol who has enjoyed massive box office success in recent years with Gadar 2 (2023) and Border 2 (2026). Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Batwara 1947 marks the filmmaker’s reunion with Sunny after 30 years — The two had earlier collaborated on some iconic 90s films like Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993), and Ghatak (1996).

The partition drama also features Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Abhimanyu Singh, and Ali Fazal in the lead cast. AR Rahman composed music for the film, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

In our review for the film, we noted, “The message, no doubt, is delivered with the subtlety of a sledgehammer — but these are not the times for subtlety and artistic understatements, maybe. Maybe we need a high-decibel and growling Sunny Deol to deliver the message, which underneath all the noise, remains as poignant and vulnerable as ever.”
