We had earlier reported about veteran filmmaker Shekhar Kapur planning a major comeback with a project titled Masoom: The New Generation, a modern reimagining of his much-acclaimed 1983 film Masoom. Now, Jugal Hansraj, who played the titular role in the 1983 film, has officially come on board for the new project as well.

Masoom: The New Generation will also have the original’s lead actors Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi, besides featuring prominent names in the lead cast like Nithya Menen and Manoj Bajpayee. Addiitonalluy, Shekhar Kapur’s daughter Kaveri Kapur will make her debut with the film.

According to a press release, Masoom: The New Generation will have the core emotions that still make the 1983 original resonate with viewers while exploring evolving themes of family, love, migration and identity through a contemporary lens. About the project, Shekhar had said earlier, "For a long time, I have felt that the themes of Masoom deserved to be revisited through the lens of today’s world. Families, relationships, identity; these ideas have evolved so much, and cinema must evolve with them."

Presently in the pre-production stage, the film is slated to start principal photography later this year. The film was scheduled tentatively for late 2026 release, previously.

The film also reunites Shekhar Kapur with composer AR Rahman after Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), as well as theatre productions Bombay Dreams and Why? - The Musical. Rahman is also onboard as a co-producer for the film.

Jugal Hansraj who had also made his film debut with Masoom (1983), went on to be a popular child artist for coming years, before making his debut as a hero with the 1994 film Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1994), which incidentally paired him opposite his Masoom co-star Urmila Matondkar.

Jugal’s other prominent film credits include Papa Kehte Hain (1996), Mohabbatein (2000) and Salaam Namaste (2005).
