The much-anticipated Ranbir Kapoor-headliner Ramayana might just be gearing up for the biggest theatrical rollout in the history of Indian cinema. As per a Sacnilk report, Sony Pictures, which is handling the film’s international distribution, is planning an overseas release on more than 50,000 screens. This would make Ramayana the widest international release ever for an Indian film.
Combined with an estimated 9,000-screen release across India, the film is expected to debut on over 59,000 screens worldwide, comfortably eclipsing every Indian film released to date. If this happens, the film will surpass films like Pushpa: The Rule (12,000 to 13,000 screens worldwide) and SS Rajamouli’s RRR (10,000 to 11,000 screens worldwide) in international distribution. Most other Indian films have historically released on fewer than 10,000 screens globally, and still gone on to rake in huge box office openings and subsequent record-breaking lifetime collections.
The 50,000 screen-mark gets Ramayana in the league of James Cameon’s Avatar: The Way of Water. The film was reported to have been released on approximately 52,000 screens worldwide and went on to score over USD 2.33 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film in history.
Recently the trailer of Ramayana: Part 1 was released by the makers and it received mixed reviews from audiences. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, apart from Ranbir as Lord Rama, the film also stars Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravi Dubey as Lakshmana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Yash as Ravana, among others. The film has been produced by Namit Malhotra. It’s a two-part saga and will have its first part released on November 6, 2026 and its second part scheduled for Diwali 2027.
