Aamir Khan has confirmed that there is going to be a sequel for 3 Idiots and he will be returning in the role of Phunsukh Wangdu aka Rancho for the film.

In a recent interview with Amar Ujala, Aamir was asked about the status of the biopic of Dadasaheb Phalke which he is a part of. While answering the question, Aamir also spoke about 3 Idiots 2. “Dadasaheb Phalke’s story is very inspirational. Rajkumar Hirani was working on it. He wrote three drafts of the script but is not happy with it and thus has put it on hold for now. Maybe he will work on it later, but right now he is working on the second part of 3 Idiots. I have heard the story. It is very good.”

Aamir adds, “It’s the story of the same characters you saw in 3 Idiots but there is a time-jump of 10 years. Rajkumar and Abhijat Joshi have conceived a nice story. I will be playing Phunsukh Wangdu again.”

Previously in an interview with Variety India, Rajkumar Hirani had said that he is working on sequels of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) and 3 Idiots. “I have a couple of ideas at the moment. I’m actually working on both films. I’ve been working on a Munna Bhai script and also on a 3 Idiots sequel idea.”

He added, “For the 3 Idiots sequel, it was just very recently that suddenly, out of nowhere, this one idea sparked up. And I have no idea how it’s gone out in the universe. Because it’s still not there, but we said we’ll work on it. And then, as and when it happens… but somehow one morning, I saw that the news was out there.”

3 Idiots came in 2009 and also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani, amongst others. It was directed by Rajkumar Hirani.

Aamir is currently doing the promotions for his son Junaid and Sai Pallavi’s upcoming romantic-drama Ek Din, for which he is also the producer. He is also backing Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta starrer Lahore 1947.
