On Sunday, legendary singer Asha Bhosle breathed her last at the age of 92. She was admitted to the hospital after she suffered from extreme exhaustion and a chest infection on Saturday. With a career spanning eight decades, Asha was a legendary singer who has performed across Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and more.
Back in 2016, the singer nominated Priyanka Chopra Jonas as the perfect choice to portray her onscreen. On the occasion of Asha's 83rd birthday, a concert event named 'Timeless Asha' was organised, where the singer was asked who should play her in a biopic. She said, “Priyanka Chopra would be the perfect choice to portray me, as she is a singer. Being a singer, she can express a singer well."
Priyanka Chopra has also expressed her admiration for Asha Bhosle constantly in various situations over the years. Previously, when she was asked to choose between Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar, in an interview at SXSW, she said, "That's a tough one, but Asha Tai." In October last year, the actor shared a clip of veteran singer Asha Bhosle recounting her childhood memories and early love for music on her Instagram story.
Bhosle came from the musically prominent Mangeshkar family. Her sister was the late Lata Mangeshkar, and their father was Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, who was also an actor and a classical singer on the Marathi musical stage.
Bhosle started her career with singing in low-budget films. Her big break came with B.R. Chopra’s Naya Daur (1957), in which she sang duets with Mohammed Rafi like ‘Maang Ke Saath Tumhara’, ‘Saathi Haath Badhana’ and ‘Uden Jab Jab Zulfein Teri’. She was known for her modern, party voice, and her songs from Teesri Manzil (1966), also sung with Rafi, like ‘Aaja Aaja’, ‘O Haseena Zulfonwali’ and ‘O Mere Sona Re', gave her more popularity.
Asha Bhosle is survived by her son, Anand Bhosle, and grandchildren, Zanai Bhosle and Chaitanya Bhosle. Her last rites will take place on Monday at 4 pm at Shivaji Park.
