The 53rd International Emmy Awards were held in New York City on Tuesday with celebrities, including high-profile directors and actors across the world attending the event. The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honoured the best films and shows on TV in 16 categories from a record 26 countries.

It was also a special moment for Indian actor-singer and songwriter Diljit Dosanjh as he was nominated in two categories including Best Performance by an Actor, for his titular role as Amar Singh Chamkila and Best TV Movie/Mini-Series. However, the film lost the award to Spanish actor Oriol Pla for Yo, Adicto, a Spanish series. The Best TV Movie/Mini-Series was awarded to Lost Boys & Fairies.

Diljit Dosanjh and director Imtiaz Ali attended the coveted event, turning heads on the red carpet.

The film, also starring Parineeti Chopra playing Chamkila's wife Amarjot Kaur, was released directly on Netflix on April 12, 2024 to rave reviews from audiences and critics, with special praise for the film's music by AR Rahman. Rahman reunited for the fifth time with the Rockstar director. The biopic drama was based on the life of popular Punjabi musician and singer Amar Singh Chamkila and his wife, tracking their path to success, leading up to their assasination.

Elsewhere in the awards show, Spain won two awards and Japan, Germany, Australia, Qatar, Canada, Denmark and Türkiye won one each. The best drama prize went to Rivals while Best Comedy went to Ludwig. Apart from Lost Boys & Fairies, UK also picked up an award for Fallen while Dispatches: Kill Zone: Inside Gaza won the Emmy for current affairs. Another Gaza based news, Al Jazeera’s Gaza, Search for Life won the Best News. This is the first time in an award show that two documentaries on the Gaza conflict won in their respective non-fiction categories.
