Opening up on why his last film, Sikandar, led by Salman Khan, failed to create ripples at the box office, director AR Murugadoss concedes that the lack of cultural connection between him and the Hindi audiences, and the language barrier.

In a recent interaction with a popular Tamil outlet, he said that making a film in one's mother tongue will make a filmmaker confident as he/she would be aware of what works in their language and will be in the know of the pop culture of that day, and this not the case when making an other language film. "We aren't sure about things, and we just believe in the script. I was not sure what the youngsters in North India liked and wanted in films when I made Sikandar."

After having delivered hits in Hindi with Ghajini and Holiday, Murugadoss' reasoning for Sikandar's failure came as a shock.

Describing making films in languages and places not familiar as a "handicap," Murugadoss added that, beyond taking a guess, there isn't much he could do to understand what goes on.

Sikandar, starring Rashmika Mandanna as the female lead, is about the prince of Rajkot, Sanjay Sikandar Rajkot (Salman Khan), who takes on a mission to protect the three beneficiaries of his deceased wife's organs. The film was criticised for a weak screenplay by critics and audiences.
