Karan Johar opened up recently about the failure of the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Agneepath at the box-office and said that his father, producer Yash Johar was heartbroken when the film didn’t work. Karan said that he wanted to remake the film in the memory of his father, which he eventually did in 2012, with Hrithik Roshan in the lead.

During a conversation with Komal Nahta on his podcast, Karan said, “My dad was heartbroken when Agneepath didn't work.  Despite all the acclaim, everyone saying it was Amit ji's best performance, and even winning a National Award, the film didn't do well. He was really heartbroken. So, I felt like, in his memory, I should remake the film and hope it does well. And it did."

The original film released in 1990 and was directed by Mukul Anand. Bachchan won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film. The 2012 remake was directed by Karan Malhotra and also starred Priyanka Chopra, Sanjay Dutt and Rishi Kapoor in pivotal roles. It eventually did good business at the box-office.
