At the Mumbai Dialogues event organised by The New Indian Express, Laapataa Ladies director Kiran Rao spoke about the originality of regional cinema and how she doesn’t feel it is a loss for Hindi cinema when regional films do well. Responding to a question on how South films are more content-driven than Hindi films, she said, “Content-driven films were always being made in the South, but we never watched them here. Now we are able to watch all of them due to wider accessibility.“

“Hindi films have entertained audiences for decades and now it’s time to make space for other films too,” she added.

Kiran’s recent film Laapataa Ladies features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Chhaya Kadam. Presented by Jio Studios, the film is produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande. The film had its theatrical release in March and is now streaming on Netflix.
