Ishwak Singh recently opened up about playing a deaf-and-mute character in his recently released espionage-thriller Berlin and said that it was a challenge to learn sign language for the film. Directed by Atul Sabharwal, the film also stars Aparshakti Khurana, Rahul Bose and Kabir Bedi in pivotal roles.

Speaking about it, Ishwak said, “When you are truly committed to your craft, you understand what it takes to bring a role to life. Whether the dialogue is minimal or extensive, and regardless of whether it’s in Hindi, English, or sign language, what matters most is the depth and authenticity you bring to the character. Learning sign language was a significant challenge, but it was far from a burden.”

He added, “I genuinely enjoyed the process because it allowed me to explore and experience a new culture. Playing the role of a deaf-mute man was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that gave me insight into the challenges they face today. Although I was a bit nervous—an unusual feeling for me—the difficulties of the role were incredibly demanding, but it was ultimately rewarding.”

In the film, Ishwak portrays Ashok Kumar, a deaf-mute man who is accused of espionage and murder during the 1993 visit of Russian President Boris Yeltsin to India. His character's silent struggle becomes central as goes through the challenges of being a suspect in a high-stakes conspiracy.

Berlin is produced by Umesh KR Bansal, Atul Sabharwal and Manav Shrivastav and will be released on ZEE5 on September 13.
