Kiran Rao recently opened up about her film Laapataa Ladies and called it a failure at the box-office as it didn’t make people to watch it in theatres. Kiran also spoke of her debut film, Dhobi Ghat (2010) and how she feels that it was different for its time.

In an interview with Faye D’Souza, Kiran said that both of her films haven’t worked at the box-office. “Dhobi Ghat, in fact, did some big business for its time. 10-15 years later, Laapataa Ladies didn't do that much more than Dhobi Ghat. So, in some ways, I do feel that sense of failure. By box office metrics, we weren't a success. In the conventional sense, we didn't do hundreds of crores, or even ₹30, 40, 50 crore. Failure is the way to put it,” she said.

She added, “I do feel responsible that the film didn't do that well at the box office. I felt it a lot during Dhobi Ghat because we didn't have any alternate mediums, we didn't have OTT. So, it didn't get a lot of audience. I do feel that film was different for its time, and very unusual for a theatrical release back then.”

According to Sacnilk.com, Laapataa Ladies did a box-office collection of Rs 24.31 crore (India gross).

It is produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande and was released in theatres on March 1. Starring Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ravi Kishan and Chhaya Kadam, the film is currently streaming on Netflix.
