The trailer of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period-drama series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar was unveiled on Tuesday. The acclaimed filmmaker’s OTT debut directorial, Heeramandi stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Sehgal and Sanjeeda Sheikh. The show will also mark the comebacks of Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman and his son Adhyayan Suman.

The series is set in Heeramandi, the red-light district of Pakistan’s Lahore, during the British Raj. As we are introduced to this glittery world, we are told that Heeramandi is run by its tawaifs (escorts) who have more say in its affairs than its white rulers or its nawabs. As the fire of Partition reaches Heeramandi, factions are created. The escorts, the nawabs and the British will resort to anything, including cheating, deception and back-stabbing to usurp power.

Talking about the series, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali said, “This is a story of love, power, freedom, and extraordinary women, their desires, and struggles. It marks a new milestone in my journey.”

The series will premiere on Netflix on May 1.
