Just like The Matrix re-release and the Avatar re-release, Anil Sharma's Gadar: Ek Prem Katha is re-releasing in theatres ahead of its sequel.

The 2001 megahit starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel will return to Indian cinemas on June 15, two months before the release of Gadar 2. Fittingly, it's the same date the original had hit theatres 22 years ago.

"As a lead up to part two of Gadar, Zee Studios plan to re-release part one in digitally restored format like how Avatar was re-released. The movie will release on the same date, which is June 15,” an official from Zee Studios was quoted as saying by PTI.

Gadar: Ek Prem Katha followed Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), an innocent truck driver who is driven to handpump-extracting rage when his wife and son are stranded in Pakistan. The film was backdropped on the brutal aftermath of the Partition of India. It was one of the biggest blockbusters of 2001, even outshining Aamir Khan's Lagaan. It's also one of the highest-earning Hindi films of all time adjusted for inflation.

The sequel to Gadar, titled Gadar 2: The Katha Continues, is releasing on August 11, 2023. The makers had recently teased a hair-raising visual of Sunny lifting a wheel.
