India woke up to grief on Sunday as legendary singer Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar passed away at a private hospital in Mumbai. She was 92. 

Lata Mangeshkar was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward of the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai since January 8. She was diagnosed with Covid-19 and a case of pneumonia. Her health had improved over the weeks and she was put off the ventilator as a trial last weekend. However, on Saturday, her health deteriorated again and she was back on life support. Dr. Pratit Samdani of Breach Candy had released a statement saying Lata was under 'aggressive treatment'. Later, her sister Asha Bhosle told reporters that she was stable, citing the doctor. 

Lata Mangeshkar, who started her career at the age of 13 in 1942, has over 30,000 songs to her credit in several Indian languages. She has won three National Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, multiple Filmfare and State awards. Her sisters, Meena, Asha, and Usha, are also renowned singers, and her brother, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, is a music director.

The news has put fans and celebrities in a state of shock as they took to social media to express their grief on the passing away of the legendary singer, who was rightfully called the 'Nightingale of India'.
