Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi will release in theatres on January 6, 2022. Set in Mumbai, the film stars Alia Bhatt as Gangubai, a real-life gangster and brothel owner who rose in the 60s. It is based on a chapter from the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai by Hussain Zaidi.

Gangubai was earlier scheduled to release on September 1 but got pushed due to the covid-19 second wave. So far, it is the first Hindi film release of 2022, followed by the Akshay Kumar-starrer Prithviraj on January 21.

Gangubai also stars Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa, and others. Ajay Devgn has a special appearance in the film.

Alia Bhatt's last release was Sadak 2 in 2020. She is making her Telugu debut in SS Rajamouli's RRR. Back in August, Alia finished filming for Darlings, her debut production. She will also be seen in Brahmastra, co-starring Ranbir Kapoor, and Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, with Ranveer Singh.
