Pen Movies deletes 'Raavan Leela', contentious dialogue from Bhavai - read statement

CE Features

Pen Movies has removed the original title and a controversial dialogue from the promo of Bhavai. The film's erstwhile title, Raavan Leela, as well as the contentious dialogue, won't be featured in the final version of the film.

Starring Pratik Gandhi and Aindrita Ray, Bhavai tells the story of two ramleela performers in love. The film's trailer, which was released on September 9, received backlash for allegedly glorifying the mythological figure of Raavan. A dialogue between Pratik's character and the actor playing Lord Ram was also criticised for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

"Our film 'Bhavai' is a fictional love story of two individuals, Raja Ram Joshi (Pratik Gandhi) and Rani (Aindrita Ray) working in a drama company and how their live changes off stage," a statement from Pen Movies reads.

"The film promo was released under the title, "Raavan Leela" as the protagonist is a drama actor who plays the role of Raavan in the drama. With due respect to the concerns regarding the title of the promo and a dialogue in the promo, we wish to clarify that the dialogue and the above title 'Raavan Leela' is not part of the film and has been removed from the promo as well respecting the sentiments of our viewers."

The makers added that they have "the highest regard for Hindu culture and the Ramayana".

"The Film and/or any portion thereof does not hurt any religious sentiments or religious beliefs," the makers said, adding that Bhavai has been granted a 'U' certificate from the CBFC.

Bhavai is set for a theatrical release on October 1.
