There were massive expectations from Ramayana: Part 1, the big-scale mythological epic starring Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi that released on November 5 worldwide. The film’s opening day figures, however, are much lower than expected.

According to Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 64.85 crores nett on Thursday. Out of these, Rs 47.50 crores come from Hindi belt, while the Kannada version earned Rs 7.25 crores nett. The other dub versions total to nearly 10 crores.

While these figures are substantial, the trade predictions and expectations were much higher. For a reference point, Ranbir Kapoor’s previous film Animal (2023) earned much higher than Ramayana: Part 1 in its Hindi version on day 1, collecting a nett figure of Rs 54.75 crores nett. However, Ramayana’s pull in Kannada market helped it secure bigger figures overall in India than Animal.

The word-of-mouth too is largely positive, but on the desired level which could lead to a massive hike in the film’s collections over the weekend. It remains to be seen whether Ramayana will manage to cross 300 crore mark in its Hindi version by the end of its extended first weekend.

Meanwhile, the massive international release works as a respite for Ramayana. The mythological epic earned Rs 50 crores from overseas market, comfortable crossing the 100 crore figure worldwide.

Produced by Namit Malhotra, Ramayana has a massive ensemble cast that features Lara Dutta, Ravie Dubey, Rakul Preet Singh, Arun Govil, Sheeba Chaddha, Kajal Aggarwal, Vivek Oberoi, and Anupam Kher among others. Sunny Deol will make an appearance in part 2 of the film series that will release only in 2028.

In our review for the film, we noted, “Ramayana: Part 1 is a visual beast of epic proportions — ambitious, uneven, but one gamble that entirely rides on its scale, the much-touted 4000 crore budget. The one that is more about soaring spectacle than searing storytelling. And it delivers. Almost.”
