The Burnout follows the back-in-action template of Tjahjanto's Nobody 2, starring Bob Odenkirk. Makers say the film is The Big Lebowski meets Jason Bourne, where a former CIA agent is past his prime. However, his carefree burnout in Ibiza is broken as he is again thrust into action.

The Indonesian filmmaker made his English feature debut with May the Devil Take You (2018), and went on to direct The Big 4 (2022), The Shadow Strays (2024), and Nobody 2 (2025). He has taken up the sequel duty of Jason Statham-starring The Beekeeper franchise, whose first film earned over $162 mn worldwide.

Timo is directing The Beekeeper 2 with a screenplay from Kurt Wimmer and Zak Penn. The film marks Statham's return as the skilled assassin Adam Clay, known as The Beekeeper.
