Director Kitao Sakurai's cinematic adaptation of the Street Fighter games is set to hit theatres on October 16. Ahead of its release, Sakurai spoke about Vidyut Jammwal's performance in the film. According to Sakurai, Dhalsim might have been a stereotypical character at the start, but the filmmaker wanted to celebrate him and approach the adaptation proper understanding. Initially, his Street Fighter team was skeptical about including Dhalsim in the story, but Sakurai insisted on his importance to it.
Eventually, he went on to cast Jammwal in the role. Speaking at a recent screening about Jammwal's character in the film, he said, "He’s more Dhalsim than Dhalsim, and he owns it, and he’s so proud of it. He’s bringing so much realness and authenticity to it."
The director stated that Jammwal's involvement has brought a fresh perspective to Dhalsim, with the action star wanting to convey the origin story of his character through the film.
Street Fighter marks Vidyut Jammwal's debut in Hollywood. The film is set to release on Friday also with dubs in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. Besides Vidyut Jammwal, the film stars Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Jason Momoa, 50 Cent, and Roman Reigns, among others.
There has been a mostly positive response to the film after its recent world premiere in Los Angeles. Many of the early reviews highlighted the film's action sequences, animation, references to the games and so forth. That said, some reviewers have highlighted flaws in storytelling as well.
This is not the first film to be made based on Capcom's fighting games. The earlier adaptations include a live-action film, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and an animation film—both released in 1994—and a 2009 live-action spinoff, featuring actor Kristin Kreuk in the lead role.
