Greta Gerwig, who previously reimagined the world of Barbie for the big screen, has now taken upon herself the task of adapting CS Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia. Netflix has now unveiled the first official poster for Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, offering a glimpse of her film's cosmic vision of the fantasy world.
The artwork features a massive silhouette of Aslan, with his mane dissolving into a star-filled expanse. At the centre, two riders on a winged horse soar through a burst of multicoloured light, evoking Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer's journey through the magical worlds. Accompanied by the tagline, "A Universe Begins", the poster foregrounds the creation of Narnia, a central element of Lewis' novel. The reveal has drawn enthusiastic responses from sections of the online fan community, with some describing the artwork as impressive and expressing renewed excitement for Gerwig's interpretation.
The poster arrives after a series of first-look images published by Empire magazine in September sparked mixed reactions. The images introduced Emma Mackey as Jadis, the future White Witch, and Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew, while offering a glimpse of Gerwig's more theatrical visual approach. The posters had fans divided, with some intrigued by the film's rock-opera direction and others concerned that the aesthetic strays too far from the books. Gerwig has cited David Bowie and The Who as influences on her approach, describing her vision as a rock opera.
Unlike the earlier film adaptations, which began with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Gerwig's film adapts The Magician's Nephew, first published in 1955. The story serves as an origin tale, following Digory and Polly as their travels between worlds lead them to the creation of Narnia and their encounter with Jadis. The film stars David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell in the lead roles, alongside Mackey, Craig, Streep, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma.
Narnia: The Magician's Nephew is scheduled to release in theatres worldwide, including IMAX, on February 12, 2027, with select IMAX previews beginning on February 10. The film will subsequently premiere on Netflix on April 2, 2027. Its first trailer, scheduled to be unveiled on Tuesday, is expected to offer a more substantial look at Gerwig's interpretation of Lewis' much-loved fantasy world.
