Actors Terry Crews and Jermaine Harris are set to lead the cast of Inauguration Day, a coming-of-age dramedy set against the backdrop of a historic moment in American politics: January 20, 2009, the day Barack Obama was sworn in as president.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Sundance alumnus Sterling Hampton IV, who also produces the project. Grammy-winning musician and entrepreneur will.i.am is attached as executive producer.
Drawing inspiration from Hampton’s own experiences attending a predominantly white school during Obama’s inauguration, the story unfolds over the course of a single day in a high school where a well-intentioned celebration quickly descends into turmoil as students clash and shifting alliances expose underlying tensions.
Harris plays Frederick, a teenager grappling with identity, friendships and first crushes while trying to find his place in the social hierarchy. Crews portrays Anthony, Frederick’s outspoken and larger-than-life father, whose involvement further intensifies the day’s already heated atmosphere.
The screenplay is written by Sabrina Lassegue, who also appears in the film. The ensemble includes Bart Johnson, Lexi Underwood, Tim Johnson Jr., Israel Johnson and Victoria Ogbonna. Supporting roles are played by Sean Lew, Karly Rothenberg, Grace Wethor and Tevin Johnson.
Hampton is producing the film under his banner Clash of the Artistic Minds alongside Lassegue’s Extinguished Youth. Additional producers include Nina Childs and Daniel Sollinger, while Harris, Tim Johnson Jr. and Bart Johnson are also credited as associate producers.
