Earlier this Thursday, Esquire dropped a poster giving a first official look at Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character from his upcoming film Werwulf, directed by Robert Eggers. In the poster, Aaron Taylor-Johnson can be seen standing amidst a group of canines and trees and holding a weapon in his hand. Esquire described the character as "a 13th-century man haunted by his bestial metamorphosis." As for Eggers, the character is a cursed and haunted farmer who experiences "great pain" and who seeks "salvation through love".

Directed by Eggers from a script that he has written with Sjon, Werwulf also stars Lily-Rose Depp, Ralph Ineson, and Willem Dafoe in pivotal roles. The film brings Eggers back together with Taylor-Johnson, Depp, Dafoe, and Ineson after collaboration on 2024's Nosferatu. It reunites the filmmaker with his co-writer on The Northman, Sjon, and with Dafoe after working on The Lighthouse. On the other hand, Ineson stars in Eggers' directorial debut The Witch as well.

Werwulf also has actor Bodhi Rae Breathnach, who is known for her work on Hamnet. It is produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner through their banner Working Title, alongside Sjon and Eggers, with Chris and Eleanor Columbus of Maiden Voyage serving as executive producers. Eggers told Esquire that the upcoming film does not have conventional elements of films in the genre, such as a werewolf bite serving as a catalyst for the beast-like transformation and other such elements that have become 'campy' in such cinema.

Earlier, Eggers delivered back-to-back critically acclaimed films, with Nosferatu reportedly raking in more than $180 million from theatres worldwide. With Werwulf, the filmmaker continues his collaboration with distributor Focus Features after his previous films. Production on the film has been wrapped, and it is set for a December 2026 release in theatres.
