Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are coming back in the iconic roles of Woody and Buzz Lightyear, respectively, for the fifth instalment in the long-running Toy Story film franchise. Interestingly, writer-director Andrew Stanton recently revealed that his first draft for Toy Story 5 did not have Woody in it. In a recent interview with DiscussingFilm, Hanks and Allen were asked whether there would be a film in the franchise without their iconic characters in it.
In response, Allen quipped, "What would he have done (about it)? He would have been home crying," channeling the kind of friendly banter that their characters share in the films.
Allen then added that he does not think the aforementioned type of film could exist. "Nobody wants to see that," the actor said. He added, "Because we started this with the two of us. At least we could be at a phone or something. In my view, it is based on this relationship between these two toys."
On the other hand, Hanks said that he "would have been OK with it," although he does not think it is a good idea. Hanks rhetorically suggested that a Toy Story film without Woody and Buzz Lightyear would be like The Beatles without Paul McCartney and George Harrison.
Coming back to Toy Story 5, the film has been receiving much appreciation after its recent unveiling to press members. Pixar's official logline for the film reads, "The toys are back and this time, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie (Joan Cusack) and the rest of the gang's jobs are challenged when they come face-to-face with Lilypad (Greta Lee), a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie. Will playtime ever be the same?"
Toy Story 5 is set to release in theatres on June 19, Friday.
