Why did Jason Momoa exit Helldivers film adaptation?

While the sci-fi film, directed by Justin Lin is active, Sony Pictures is currently looking for another star to headline the movie

Earlier this year, we had reported that Jason Momoa was set to lead popular video game Helldivers' film adaptation. It has now been confirmed that the Aquaman star has exited the project.

While the sci-fi film, directed by Justin Lin is active, Sony Pictures is currently looking for another star to headline the movie. As per Variety, no reason has been provided for Momoa's departure from the film, which has been developed by Arrowhead Game Studios.

His exit comes while the adaptation remains on track for its scheduled theatrical release on November 10, 2027.

The Helldivers follow a specialised squad of elite soldiers tasked with protecting the galaxy from hostile alien forces — most commonly referred to as Bugs, Cyborgs, and the Illuminate. These enemies pose a constant threat to the fragile, propaganda-driven regime known as Super Earth. With elements like mutated spores and reanimated alien carcasses entering the mix, the franchise leans fully into its chaotic sci-fi horror roots, delivering an all-out extraterrestrial battlefield spectacle.

Details regarding other cast members from the film have not been revealed yet. Sony Pictures and Playstation are backing the film. This marks the latest big-screen collaboration between the two production houses following 2022's video game adaptation Uncharted. Starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, the film became a box office winner, earning $407 million globally.

Besides directing, Lin will also serve as the producer for the film through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner, along with Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. The initial script for the film was written by Gary Dauberman, the writer behind notable horror hits like It and Annabelle.
