Prime Video is continuing to unveil its cast for the upcoming God of War series. Now, Olafur Darri Olafsson has been announced to play Thor in the series.
Earlier, Ryan Hurst was announced to be playing the protagonist, Kratos. Later, Max Parker was announced as Heimdall. According to Prime Video, the official character description of Thor reads, "The God of Thunder is a mountain of a man who has weathered many a battle in his time but whose actions in a war fought long ago now haunt his waking hours. Once the loyal soldier of Asgard and his father’s right hand man, Thor is now but a shadow of his former self as he drowns himself in alcohol and tries not to think of the price he paid. Keeping his wife and children at arm’s length has only deepened his isolation, but the power (and danger) of the God of Thunder is still there just beneath the surface."
While Olafsson will be wielding the hammer for Prime Video, in December, Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor, leading the cast of Avengers: Doomsday.
God of War will be an adaptation of the 2022 video game God of War: Ragnarok. The series will follow the journey of Kratos and his son Atreus, as they journey to spread the ashes of Atreus' mother, Faye. In their journey, Kratos teaches his son to be a better god, while Atreus teaches his father to be a better human.
Ronald D Moore serves as the showrunner for God of War. Frederick EO Toye, who has worked on Shogun, is set to direct the first two episodes of the series. Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Tall Ship Productions and Amazon MGM Studios are backing the series.
Olafsson has appeared in True Detective season 1, Severance, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
