The Handmaid's Tale sequel series The Testaments locks release date

The Testaments is described as a "dramatic coming-of-age story set in Gilead"

The Testaments, the much-anticipated sequel series to Hulu's criticially acclaimed The Handmaid's Tale has set an April 8 premiere date on the streamer. Coming from the showrunner and executive producers of The Handmaid's Tale, The Testaments will release will three episodes on its premiere which will be followed by a new episode every week.

Described as a "dramatic coming-of-age story set in Gilead", The Testaments is set to revolve around young teens Agnes (Chase Infiniti), dutiful and pious, and Daisy (Lucy Halliday), a new arrival and convert from beyond Gilead’s borders. "As they navigate the gilded halls of Aunt Lydia’s (Ann Dowd) elite preparatory school for future wives, a place where obedience is instilled brutally and always with divine justification, their bond becomes the catalyst that will upend their past, their present, and their future," reads the plotline.

Ann Dowd returns from the original series to the sequel to play Aunt Lydia Clements, a woman in charge of overseeing the Handmaids in their sexual re-education and duties. Agnes/Hannah is the daughter of June Osborne, who was played by Elizabeth Moss in The Handmaid's Tale. Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana and Birva Pandya play supporting roles in the upcoming series.

The Testaments is an evolution of The Handmaid's Tale which is based on Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name.

Bruce Miller, who adapted the original for the streamer, is the creator, showrunner and executive producer of The Testaments. Other executive prouducers include Warren Littlefield, Elisabeth Moss, Steve Stark, Shana Stein, Maya Goldsmith, John Weber, Sheila Hockin, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, and Mike Barker. The first three episodes will be directed by Barker.
