Actor Josh Brolin, who played a key role in director Zach Cregger's critically acclaimed horror film Weapons, recently talked about horror cinema having a prominent space among other films in the awards season. Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes, Brolin said that there is more to the films getting the prominence than just the genre. Calling it a "great" trend, the actor said, "It's not just the genre" before explaining how horror films, such as Weapons, "bring character to" the piece of entertainment. According to Brolin, such horror films "bring real people into it who have real reactions and emotions," making the cinematic experience way "more complete and more colourful". Brolin commended his Weapons co-star Amy Madigan, calling her performance in the film "unbelievable".

For the uninitiated, Madigan is one of the five actors to be nominated in the Best Supporting Actress Oscar category this year. Besides Madigan, Sinners stars Michael B Jordan, Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku also earned nominations in the acting categories. At the same time, Sinners earned a Best Picture Oscar nod, whereas Ryan Coogler is competing in the direction and original screenplay categories. The Ryan Coogler directorial also has a nomination for a Best Original Song Oscar for 'I Lied To You'.

Besides Sinners and Weapons, Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein, a blend of science fiction and gothic horror, competes for an Oscar in some major categories, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (for Jacob Elordi).
