While the Hawkins chapter in Stranger Things may be over with season five, the Duffer Brothers are planning to make a spinoff of the popular show. Speaking to Deadline, the filmmaker duo said that the fifth season hints at a spinoff. Spoiler alert for those who are yet to watch Stranger Things 5: the finale ends with Hopper (David Harbour) moving to the New York hamlet Montauk. As for the Duffer Brothers, the Montauk reference is not a hint at the spinoff but rather "more of a wink to the fans, deep-cut fans that know that the show started as Montauk". The filmmakers also revealed that the spinoff idea they have in mind is smaller as compared to one revolving around Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) and other kids.

That said, the spinoff is related to the Stranger Things finale and would answer certain questions that still linger in the minds of those who have watched it. The Duffer Brothers are still in an early phase of developing the spinoff, a project they said that has its own plot and mythology.

The Netflix show started with the first season in 2016, offering a combination of children's adventure reminiscent of early Steven Spielberg films, such as ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, and horror elements similar to Stephen King's novels. It eventually became a worldwide phenomenon with the subsequent seasons and the most-watched Netflix show in terms of the viewing hours.
