We had previously reported that popular video game Helldivers is set to get a film adaptation. The makers have now announced that Jason Momoa will star in the action adventure movie. Directed by Justin Lin, known for his work on the Fast & Furious action movies, the upcoming feature has set a November 10, 2027 release date in theatres.
The Helldivers follow a specialised squad of elite soldiers tasked with protecting the galaxy from hostile alien forces — most commonly referred to as Bugs, Cyborgs, and the Illuminate. These enemies pose a constant threat to the fragile, propaganda-driven regime known as Super Earth. With elements like mutated spores and reanimated alien carcasses entering the mix, the franchise leans fully into its chaotic sci-fi horror roots, delivering an all-out extraterrestrial battlefield spectacle.
Details regarding other cast members from the film have not been revealed yet. Sony Pictures and Playstation are backing the film. This marks the latest big-screen collaboration between the two production houses following 2022's video game adaptation Uncharted. Starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, the film became a box office winner, earning $407 million globally.
Besides directing, Lin will also serve as the producer for the film through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner, along with Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. The initial script for the film was written by Gary Dauberman, the writer behind notable horror hits like It and Annabelle.
The Helldivers game was first released in 2015 to rave reviews while its sequel Helldivers 2 sold over 12 million units across PS 5 and PC in its first four months alone when it hit markets last year.
Jason Momoa recently headlined the video game adaptation A Minecraft Movie alongside Jack Black, which turned into a massive global success, earning over $950 million at the box office. In 2026, he is set for a packed slate, portraying the cosmic bounty hunter Lobo in DC's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, taking on the role of the wild warrior Blanka in Street Fighter, and reprising Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three.
